Question and Answer

THE INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

What is the integumentary system?
The integumentary system comprises our body’s protective shield, the skin.

Together with hair, nails and membranes, the skin serves as an initial barrier to the millions of particles and environmental assaults that the body experiences daily. Without this strong defense, life-sustaining organs and systems would be exposed to an infinite and unstoppable barrage of pathogens.

The skin’s top layer or epidermis is a regenerative tissue. The horny layer or keratin secretes sweat and acidic sebum to kill germs on contact.

What are the common skin diseases?
Skin diseases are usually easily recognized as they affect the visible, outer layer of the body. They include acne, psoriasis, fever blisters, warts, dermatitis and skin cancer.
